Lincolnland Club and District Leaders,
This edition of "Around Lincolnland" features the Exchange Club of Galesburg. For more information, please contact Galesburg Club President Cheryl Geitner at cgeitner@illinois.edu.
The Exchange Club of Galesburg was chartered on September 26th, 1924, and is Lincolnland's most experienced club. Many years ago, Galesburg Exchangites started distributing small American Flags to youngsters at local parades. Galesburg submitted their special project to National, and the Exchange Club's GiveAKidAFlagToWave program was officially born. Each year Galesburg distributes over 1500 flags to smiling children attending the Memorial Day and Labor Day parades, and through the years Exchangites all across America have handed out hundreds of thousands of flags due to a great idea that started in Galesburg.
Galesburg has dedicated Freedom Shrines at area schools, the VFW, and the American Legion. In May 2007 the Freedom Shrine located at Galesburg High School was rededicated in the memory of Army Staff Sgt. Kyle B. Wehrly and others who have made the ultimate sacrifice while in duty for our country. The club has provided funding for youth-related projects at local organizations including Knox County Area Project, Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center, Teen Court, University of Illinois extension, and American Red Cross. Galesburg sponsors a $500 Carl Sandburg College Scholarship to a deserving student who has exhibited an appreciation for community service. For their Adopt-A-Highway project, club members pick-up debris twice a year along Linwood Road from Main Street to Monmouth Boulevard. The Blue Ribbon Task Force of Knox County has given special thanks to the Exchange Club of Galesburg for its generous contribution in supporting the Prevention of Child Abuse.
Thanks for all you do in the Spirit of Exchange.
