Lincolnland Club and District Leaders,

This edition of "Around Lincolnland" features the Exchange Club of Alton.  For more information on the club, please contact Past District President and Alton Newsletter Editor Bill Marshall at marshallwm27@hotmail.com.

The Exchange Club of Alton was chartered 83 years ago in 1927 and currently has 27 members.  Throughout the years, we have actively served the Greater Alton Community.  Our club has raised funds in the community to purchase the original body armor (a fancy term for bullet proof vests) for the Alton Police Department, and we have provided life saving equipment for the Alton Fire Department.  We have installed numerous Freedom Shrines throughout the area, including one of the country's few outdoor shrines located in our park.  We have maintained that shrine for 30 years, and we were proud to make the cover of "The Exchangite" magazine when the shrine was originally completed.  Alton has also installed a Freedom Shrine in the Lambert St. Louis Airport concourse.  Our current annual programs include Giveakidaflagtowave at the Memorial Day Parade in Alton (8,000 to 10,000 flags), and we treat the residents of a group home for the developmentally disabled to a day of fishing and fun at a member's farm as well as a Christmas Party where one of our members plays Santa Claus and gives presents to all.  Each year we sponsor an ACE Award for area high school students and Basketball Player of the Year Awards for high school boys (for 65 years) and girls (for 15 years).  In addition, Alton presents an annual Book of Golden Deeds Award and Proudly We Hail Award.  We also sponsor group activities for members of the Alton Boys and Girls Club, and we have a separate fund that takes care of emergency needs for needy school children, such as providing eyeglasses and dental work.  Our fundraisers include spring and fall candy sales, a road block, and a nut sale during the Christmas Season.

Thanks for all you do in the Spirit of Exchange.

Scot
